Plant-Based Outdoor Food Guide

Plant-based outdoor meals should be chosen for the route, weather, cooking limits, water supply, carrying weight and the people eating them—not simply because a package is labeled vegan.

Build balanced choices

Combine carbohydrate sources with beans, lentils, soy foods, nut or seed products where allergies permit, and calorie-dense fats. Include fruit, vegetables and fortified foods where practical.

Check labels

Verify ingredients, allergens, serving calories, preparation water and storage. “Plant-based” does not guarantee allergy-safe, nutritionally complete or suitable for a medical diet.

Plan water and fuel

Dried beans and grains may take considerable water and cooking time. Carry no-cook options and never use a stove in a tent, vehicle or enclosed shelter.

Protect food

Keep perishable foods at safe temperatures, separate raw ingredients and follow local wildlife storage rules. Pack out waste.

Product boundary

Current Survival Tabs information includes milk solids, so standard Survival Tabs should not be presented as vegan. Verify any separately branded Vegan Tabs only from its exact current label.
