Coastal Flooding and Sea-Level Rise Preparedness Guide

Coastal flooding can result from storm surge, waves, tides, heavy rain and drainage limits. Rising sea levels can increase the frequency or reach of some coastal flood hazards, but property decisions require current local maps and qualified advice.

Know the mapped risk

Use official FEMA and local flood information, evacuation zones and forecasts. Maps can change and do not capture every possible event.

Plan evacuation early

Know multiple routes, accessible transportation, destinations and pet arrangements. Leave when officials direct; never drive through floodwater or around barriers.

Protect the household

Store documents, medication, water and portable food above likely flood levels. Use qualified professionals for structural elevation, flood vents, utilities and code requirements.

Insurance and records

Review flood coverage before a threat, document property safely and keep policy and contact records. Standard policies may not cover every flood loss.

After flooding

Avoid water, damaged buildings, electrical hazards and contaminated food. Wait for clearance and follow public-health cleanup guidance. Survival Tabs or other food exposed to floodwater must be discarded.
